I had one of those moments last Friday when I tried to explain the skeleton of my novel plot to someone, just to have it sound really boring and trite. It's a good story, and my characters are going to be the fuel that drives the action...but trying to summerize it to another person out loud made me feel really lame.
I didn't give up though, because hey, once I get going it's all gonna flow and groove. At least that's what I thought until I had a long convo with tarvosio last night, who kept comparing one of my characters to River from the show Firefly. He wasn't being mean or anything, he actually had a point. And that ticked me off rather badly because I've had this plotbunny in cryo since before I'd even heard of that wonderful show. ACK!
So then I'm faced with something that haunts me whenever I attempt to write long pieces of fiction: Someone Got There First. The first time I tried NaNoWriMo I quit halfway through when I realized that my plot was a ghetto knockoff of a Stephen King plot. I've started fantasy/romance novellas that read...like every other romance novella. Ok. So that's a bad example. Most romance novels are sadly cookie cutter in nature, and it takes a damn good writer to produce a series that stands out.
However, I talked to my mom today, and she asked me whether I was writing this novel for praise, or because it is something I loved. I realized then that my worrying about not being completely original and BRILLIANT was actually sort of snobbish and trivial. I love my story, and the characters in it, and hey, if someone comes along later and shreds it...ah well. I'm still doing what I love to do. Hooray for NaNoWriMo for forcing me to check my ego at the door. ^_^
I am setting up a deviant art site where I'm going to post the bits of writing I amass during November, so if people care to read what I spin, that will be the place. As of right now there will be some of my older works and some poetry. Yee-haw.
Lastly, if anyone wants to challenge me to write a drabble, leave your request after the beep. I'll write back to you as soon as I can.
